Hi! Welcome to the wonderful world of Treat Me Sweet. I'm Crystal and I had no intention, whatsoever, to start a baking business.
I'm actually a trained Architectural Designer with a Bachelor's in Architecture and an Associate's in Landscape Design. I like to work with my hands and I like to make things pretty. I've always been a creative person, into art, calligraphy, interior design and all that fun stuff.
So how did I go from being an Architect to designing cakes? I'm glad you asked!
Picture it, Freeport, 2007 (Shout out to the Golden Girls. Love them!) I was working at a local Architectural firm at the time and one day I came up with a scrumptious gourmet parfait recipe while messing around in my kitchen. They are quite delicious and I ended up offering them for sale.
Fast-forward to 2012, and I receive a call from a purchaser asking if I could make their wedding cake. This was my exact face: :-O
I politely explained to her that I did not make cakes, much less wedding cakes. She told me I HAD to make her cake, there had to be a way. I told her I'd look into it and experiment to see if it was something I was capable of doing. I looked at one or two youtube videos and thought to myself, "It doesn't seem too hard, but, I don't think I want to take a chance on someone's wedding cake."
Several months later, I get a call from the bride wanting to pay her deposit. Again, my face! :-O Oh, you were SERIOUS, serious?!
She was so insistent, I took the chance, researched and practiced and I made my first ever wedding cake. It was a 3 - tier cake, with hexagon and round tiers, Swiss Meringue Buttercream with homemade Guava, Mango and Coconut Curd fillings. I even made a 2 - tiered Groom's cake to look like a police uniform, with a custom made fondant police hat. (I tend to go ALL in, lol)
All of this was my first time. All of these were things I couldn't do. But, that didn't stop me from doing them!
I know this is a tad lengthy, but I want you to take away from this that you, too, can do impossible things. I was bitten by the baking bug, discovered a passion and skills I wasn't aware of and, now, Cake is Life! All because someone saw potential in me and insisted I do something with it.
I encourage YOU to take a chance on your potential and explore the endless possibilities that are just waiting for you to give it a shot. How exciting is it to think what adventures are on the other side of your YES!
I really didn't choose the cake life. It chose me and I am very happy it did. I would love for you to join me on my cake adventure!
